The coral stone mosques of Maldives are a series of culturally and architecturally unique sites. The mosques are assembled from porite coral stone (hirigaa) hewn from the reef, and with their combination of carved coral stone and timber lacquerwork represent a cultural fusion found nowhere else in the world. The coral stone carpentry techniques used for the assembly of the mosques are now extinct, while coral mining is no longer possible for environmental reasons. The surviving mosques distributed throughout the country are the last of their kind and have become monuments of outstanding value that need to be protected for the future.
ދިވެހި ރާއްޖޭގެ ހިރިގަލު މިސްކިތްތަކަކީ ސަޤާފީ ގޮތުން އަދި ބިނާކުރުވަނިވި ގޮތުން ހާއްސަ ބިނާތަކެކެވެ. މި މިސްކިތްތައް ޢިމާރާތްކޮށްފައި ހުންނަނީ ޒީނަތްތެރި ކުރެވިފައި ހުންނަ ހިރިގައުތައް އެއް ގައު އަނެއް ގަލާ ތަޅު އެޅިގެންދާނޭ ގޮތަށެވެ. މި މިސްކިތްތައް ބިނާކޮށްފައި ހުންނަނީ “ގަލުވަޑާމޭ” ކިޔާ މަސައްކަތްތެރިކަމުގެ ހުނަރުތައް ބޭނުންކޮށް އަދި ހިރިގަލުގައި ކުރެހުންތައް ކަނޑައި ނަގައިފައެވެ. ލަކުޑި ވަޑާންގަނޑު ހުންނަނީ ލިޔެލާޖެހުމުގެ ލިޔުންތަކާއި ކުރެހުންތައް އަޅާފައެވެ. މިއީ، ދުނިޔޭގެ އެހެން ތަނަކުން ފެންނާންހުންނަ ފަންނީ މަސައްކަތެކެނޫނެވެ. މިއަދު ގަލުވަޑާން ވަނީ އުވިގެން ގޮސްފައެވެ. ތިމާވެށީގެ ސަބަބުތަކަށްޓަކައި ހިރިގައު ނެގުންވަނީ ހުއްޓިފައެވެ. މިހާރު ހުރި މިވައްތަރުގެ މިސްކިތްތަކަކީ، ފެންނާން ހުރި ހަމައެކަނި ނަމޫނާތަކެވެ. އަދި ދުނިޔޭގެ ޘަޤާފަތުގެވެސް އަގުހުރި ބިނާތަކެކެވެ. އެހެންކަމުން އެފަދަ މިސްކިތްތައް ރައްކާތެރިކޮށް، އަންނަން އޮތް ޖީލުތަކަށްޓަކައި ޙިމާޔަތްކުރުން މުހިންމެވެ.
