The first house of prayer was built when the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) migrated to Medina in 622ce. It was a simple shelter with palm tree trunks, supporting a roof of palm leaves. The mosque was within his residential compound and was the place for meetings, congregational prayer and also the school, the courthouse, and the centre of Muslim life. The first four caliphs also continued to use the mosque in the tradition of the Prophet, and the mosque structure remained simple and humble.
During the Umayyad dynasty that followed the first four caliphs, the role of the mosque changed from being the main centre of Muslim life to having a more specialised purpose. Rulers separated their residences from the mosque, the madrasah-mosque emerged, the Sufi masters established separate mosques and bigger mosques originated for congregation and political status.
The Abbasid dynasty that followed brought more developments to the typology of the mosque. They separated many traditional mosque functions and the mosque became the place of prayers, congregational sermons and public announcements. The Abbasids also started building tombs and mausoleums inside and near mosques, and began erecting palaces with a grand mosque adjacent, to symbolise the central authority in Muslim cities.
Today the main purposes of the mosques are as a place of congregational prayer and as a centre for religious learning, preaching, religious celebrations and religious administration.
Mosques are found in three sizes that primarily respond to the needs and levels of prayers. First is the individual mosque or masjid. The second is a Jami masjid or Friday mosque. The third is the Idgah masjid or the grand mosque, used for large gatherings for prayers and sermons like the Eid prayers.
Over time, mosques evolved with a set of typical architectural features. Not all of these features are observed in all mosques, but they do not change much with sectarian differences within Islam.
Mosques do not have a specific architectural style but as Islam spread throughout the world, different styles of mosque architecture evolved from the following regions:
ކީރިތި ރަސޫލާ މުޙައްމަދު ﷺ މަދީނާއަށް ހިޖުރަ ކުރެއްވުމާއި ގުޅިގެން ބިނާ ކުރެވުނު ފުރަތަމަ މިސްކިތް ބިނާ ކުރެވިފައިވަނީ 622 ގައެވެ. އެ މިސްކިތަކީ ކަދުރު ރުއް ބޭނުން ކުރައްވައިގެން ވަރަށް ސާދާކޮށް އެޅުއްވި މިސްކިތެކެވެ. ފުރާޅަކަށް ފެތުރުއްވެވީ ކަދުރު ރުކުގެ ފަނެވެ. އެ މިސްކިތަކީ ކީރިތި ރަސޫލާ މުޙައްމަދު ﷺ ދިރިއުޅުއްވި ގެކޮޅާއި ގުޅިގެން އެޅުއްވި މިސްކިތެކެވެ. ބައްދަލުވެ ވަޑައިގަތުންތަކާއި މަޝްވަރާފުޅުތައް ބޭއްވެވީ އެތަނުގައެވެ. ނަމާދު ކުރެއްވުމުގެ އިތުރުން އެތަނުގައި ދީން އޮޅުންފިލުއްވަވައި ދެއްވުމާއި ކީރިތި ޤުރުއާން ކިޔަވަން ދަސްކޮށްދެއްވިއެވެ. އެ މިސްކިތް ވެގެން ދިޔައީ މުސްލިމުންގެ ދިރިއުޅުމުގެ މަރުކަޒެއް ކަމުގައެވެ. އުންމަތުގެ ފުރަތަމަ ހަތަރު ޚާލީފާއިންވެސް މިސްކިތުގެ ބޭނުން ހިއްޕެވީ ކީރިތި ރަސޫލާ މުޙައްމަދު ﷺ ވެސް ކަންތައް ކުރެއްވި ގޮތުގެ މަތީންނެވެ. މިސްކިތް ބެހެއްޓެވީ ސާދާކޮށް އާދައިގެ ގޮތަކަށެވެ.
އުންމަތުގެ ފުރަތަމަ ހަތަރު ޚަލީފާއިންނަށް ފަހު، އައި އުމައްޔަދު ދަރިކޮޅުގެ ވެރިކަމުގައި މިސްކިތުގެ ބޭނުން ތަފާތުވެގެން ދިޔައެވެ. މުސްލިމުންގެ ދިރިއުޅުމުގެ ހުރިހާ ކަމެއްގެ މަރުކަޒަކަށް މިސްކިތް ވުމުގެ ބަދަލުގައި، މިސްކިތް ބޭނުން ކުރެވުނީ ޚާއްސާ ކަންތައްތަކަށެވެ. ވެރީން ދިރިއުޅުއްވާ ގެކޮޅު މިސްކިތާއި ވަކި ކުރެއްވިއެވެ. އަދި މަދުރަސީ މިސްކިތް އާލާވިއެވެ. ސޫފީ އިމާމުން ވަކި މިސްކިތް ބޭނުން ކުރައްވަން ފެއްޓެވިއެވެ. އަދި ނަމާދު ކުރުމަށާއި އުންމަތުގެ ހައުބަތު ރަމްޒު ކޮށްދިނުމަށްޓަކައި މިސްކިތްތައް ބޮޑެތިކޮށް މޮޅު ކުރެވުނެވެ.
އައްބާސީ ދަރިކޮޅުގެ ވެރިކަމުގައި، މިސްކިތް ބޭނުންކުރާ ގޮތަށް ބަދަލުތަކެއް އައެވެ. މިސްކިތުގައި ކުރިން ކުރަމުން ގެންދިޔަ ކަންތައްތައް ބަދަލު ކުރައްވައި މިސްކިތަކީ ހަމައެކަނި ނަމާދުކޮށް، ޚުތުބާ ކިޔާ އަދި އެންގުންތައް އަންގާ ތަނަކަށް ބަދަލު ކުރެއްވިއެވެ. އެ ވެރިކަމުގައި، މިސްކިތުގެ ތެރޭގައި ނުވަތަ ކައިރީގައި މަޤުބަރާތައް ހައްދަވަން ފެއްޓެވިއެވެ. އަދި އިސްލާމީ ވެރިކަން ރަމްޒު ކުރުމަށް މިސްކިތް ހިމެނޭ ގޮތަށް ބޮޑެތި ގަނޑުވަރުތައް ހައްދަވަން ފެއްޓެވިއެވެ.
މިއަދު، މިސްކިތުގެ މައިގަނޑު ބޭނުމަކީ ޖަމާޢަތުގައި ނަމާދު ކުރުމެވެ. ހަމައެހެންމެ، ދީނީ ޢިލްމު އުނގަންނައިދީ ދީނީ އިޙްތިފާޟުތައް ފާޅުކޮށް ދީނީ ކަންކަމުގެ އިދާރީ ކަންކަންވެސް ހަމަޖައްސާ ތަނަކަށް މިސްކިތް ވެފައިވެއެވެ.
މިސްކިތް ބޭނުންކުރާ ގޮތަށް ބަލާ އިން ސައިޒަކަށް މިސްކިތް ބިނާކޮށް އުޅުނެވެ. އެންމެ ޢާންމު މިސްކިތްތަކަކީ ވަގުތުން ވަގުތަށް ނަމާދު ކުރާ ކުދި މިސްކިތްތަކެވެ. ދެން ހުންނަނީ ހުކުރު ދުވަހު ހުކުރު ކުރާ، ގިނަ ޢަދަދެއްގެ މީހުން އެއްވާ ހުކުރު މިސްކިތެވެ. ދެން އެންމެ ބޮޑުވާނީ އިދުޣާ މިސްކިތެވެ. ޢީދު ނަމާދު ފަދަ އަޅުކަން ކުރުމަށްޓަކައި ޖަމާޢަތުގެ އެންމެން އެއްވާ މިސްކިތެވެ.
ޒަމާންތައް ދައުރުވަމުން އައިސް، ޢާންމު ސިފަތަކެއް މިސްކިތަކަށް ކަނޑައެޅިގެން އެގޮތަށް ބިނާ ކުރެވެން ފަށައިފިއެވެ. މި ދެންނެވި ހުރިހާ ސިފަތައް ހުރިހާ މިސްކިތެއްގައި ނުހެރެ ދާގޮތް ވެއެވެ. އަދި ތަފާތު މަޒުހަބުތައް ހުރި ނަމަވެސް، މައިގަނޑު ސިފަތައް ދަމަހައްޓައިގެން މިސްކިތް ބިނާކުރެވެމުންދެއެވެ.
